| A third world kind of country... In a discussion about Paraguay (Asuncion) compared to Uruguay (Montevideo) someone mentioned that although they enjoyed Asuncion a lot and it had a lot of nice things, they mentioned that it was a bit more third worldish. As I was talking through downtown Asuncion I walked through the park Juan E. O'Leary and noticed something different. I'm not sure how new it was or if it was just so much in contrast to thoughts about being "third world" that it leaped out at me. You probably can't read the sign in my picture here unless you click on it and increase it... but it says: FREE WIFI! Now, I don't think third world and free wifi in the park are a combination that really go together. Nor are having 4 cellular companies to choose from. Nor having a mall almost completely fully of computer and cellular phone stores... not to mention streets and galleries full of them too. Not only is it a contrast with being third world, but it is also a contrast with Montevideo... the quantity of options and choices in the world of technology. | "third worldish"
Good one Glen...interesting to see thoughts on Asunción..me I have been here so long I think I do not think about those things anymore...so this is going to be enriching...wondering if the things that make it seem third-worldish might not be the reasons for leaving wherever one left.....at least some of them... |
| "Infrastructure"
It is probably more of the physical infrastructure people see and consider third world like... old business... horrible traffic... But look deeper into the traffic mess... which is better horrible traffic jams with people that are angry for a moment as they toot their horn once... or traffic in the USA with first world infrastructure and serious problems of road rage? I also think in general most of the public restrooms in Asuncion are cleaner than those find in many first world places.... And back to the technology, I think there are more options and high bandwidths available here than in much of the USA (ie: outside the large metropolitan areas). Of course that's not a completely fair comparison. Expert Page: Expat Services from Total Paraguay |
