| Music and the Arts Paraguay is a landlocked country in South America with a rich history and diverse culture. Founded by Spanish colonists in the early 16th century on lands inhabited by the Guarani tribes, Paraguay achieved her independence from Spain in 1811. The population of Paraguay is almost entirely Spanish mestizo. Paraguayans are proud of their indigenous heritage, and it shows in their art and music. The art of Paraguay reflects the influence of the indigenous Guarani and Spanish mestizo population. Folk arts and crafts are the primary art form and range from the practical to modern and decorative. The most distinctive folk arts in Paraguay are basket-weaving and feathered ornaments, as well as ceramics and wood-carving. Each of these folk arts has a deeply-rooted indigenous tradition, but they have all been affected by European colonial influences. Paraguay also has a rich tradition of visual arts, beginning with the arrival of the Spanish colonists. Over the centuries painters, sculptors, dancers and playwrights have given the visual arts of Paraguay a distinctively South American flavor. Combining traditional European structures with indigenous materials and motifs, Paraguayan artists have created a style of art that is unique to this region. Popular music in Paraguay reflects the European influence on the country, while being sung almost entirely in Guarina?the indigenous dialect that serves as Paraguay?s second official language. The most popular form of music is the Paraguayan polka, which employs both structures and instrumentation similar to that of the European polka. There are many forms of the Paraguayan polka, but he most popular is the Guarania, created by José Asunción Flores in 1925. The Guarania combines popular elements of the European polka with slower, more complex rhythms and lyrics with traditional, folk motifs sung in Guarina. Due to the restrictions on self expression imposed by the Stroessner regime from 1954-1989, Paraguayan music was not influenced by outside cultures. Since the collapse of the regime in the late 80?s, Paraguay has seen an influx of rock music and rock influences. Recently, several rock acts from Paraguay have gained wide popularity throughout South America and Europe, even touring in the United States. But the cultural exchange doesn?t stop there: in 2008 the US ambassador to Paraguay, James Carson, recorded an album of traditional Paraguayan folk songs in Guarnia that has become a hit in that country.
